In the days of old when inside plumbing was using the place of the outhouse, the width or length of the lavatory was determined by the duration of the bath tub and the lavatory was built around it. It usually made abutting room short changed.

Where space is limited, and expansion isn’t a possibility, a small sink is a perfect space saver. A basic no frills sink over a pedestal will fit into nearly every space but still fulfill the functionality of the lavatory. A small sink is probably not as accommodating like a large sink for washing out personal items but the lavatory isn’t the laundry room, either..
